Job Description

Under the supervision of the Nursing Program Director and Dean of the Health Sciences and Human Services Department and in collaboration with nursing faculty members and Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital (NNRH) Clinical Education, this individual is responsible for instructing nursing students in the skills, techniques, simulation experiences, methods of basic nursing practices required in a clinical setting, and for planning, scheduling, directing and supervising NNRH staff education.

This is a full-time position 12-month contract that both coordinates the GBC nursing skills lab and NNRH education and staff training. This includes maintaining and scheduling the GBC lab for students and working as a nursing faculty to assist with clinical learning and practice skills lab and simulation. The position is also responsible for planning, directing, and supervising NNRH staff education. Directs and coordinates new NNRH employee orientation and reports said activities to department manager and chief nursing officer. Directs and coordinates competency program for NNRH staff. Maintains standards of professional nursing, and functions as a leader in the health care team. Collaborates consistently with appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate educational programs and opportunities.

A recent background in clinical nursing and previous instructional experiences are desirable. The position is located in Elko, Nevada, on the main campus.

The individual awarded this position is expected to be an active and engaged member of the College and the Department. A physical presence on campus is required for the benefit of students and a collegial atmosphere.

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Nursing preferred or minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and be actively enrolled in a MSN program within one year of hire date. Nursing degrees must be from a nursing program accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or CNEA and a regionally accredited institution.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience as a nursing professional which includes direct care of patients.
  • State of Nevada Licensed Registered Nurse or be able to be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Nevada (licensure will be required to fulfill the duties of the position).
  • Previous instructional experience is desirable, particularly in the community college setting. A recent background in medical/surgical, acute care, mental health, and/or community health nursing is strongly preferred.
  • BLS certification
  • Ability and willingness to work in two locations and allocate time for the split position with GBC Nursing Lab and as the NNRH Education Coordinator.
  • Ability and willingness to organize and implement multiple projects at once.
  • Show evidence of ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Have the ability to perform basic computer operations, including Microsoft Office software experience, particularly with Word proficiency.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Demonstrate a positive, encouraging approach to dealing with students and coworkers.
  • Demonstrate a collegiality and flexibility in working as a team member and patient/family advocate.
  • Experience with clinical simulation is desirable


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Current knowledge of the theories, concepts, procedures, practice, and processes in the area of professional nursing practice and patient care.
  • Ability to instruct students in nursing practices and procedures in the clinical laboratory setting.
  • Ability to instruct NNRH staff in certification and required training.
  • Ability to analyze laboratory skill exercises and teaching methods and to evaluate program effectiveness and adequacy.
  • Be able to assess student performance and necessary performance improvement requirements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and non-faculty members of the GBC nursing department and NNRH staff.
  • Must be able to identify, plan, and coordinate all aspects required in the effective support of a nursing skills laboratory.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care at NNRH.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards, and precautions to establish a safe work environment at NNRH.
  • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going patient care.
  • Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality improvement at NNRH.
  • Abe to meet physical, visual, and hearing requirements for patient care and student instruction.


Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implements nursing laboratory exercises, simulations, and experiences in keeping with current standards of nursing practice requirements.
  • Instruct nursing students in essential nursing skills in the nursing laboratory setting.
  • Assess and evaluate the psychomotor skills, clinical competency, and critical reasoning abilities of nursing students in the nursing laboratory setting.
  • Incorporate technology in simulation experiences. Programs and maintains patient simulator(s) and interfaces with faculty to ensure integration into curriculum and training.
  • Ensure proper care and maintenance of all training laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate GBC nursing skills lab to include lab usage, ordering, monitoring, and maintaining equipment and supplies, making recommendations regarding various lab space designs, space utilization, skills lab equipment and major purchases.
  • Evaluate and advise GBC nursing student performance and progress toward meeting program and course learning outcomes. Understand and apply current grading policy.
  • Coordinate clinical/lab rotations in collaboration with fellow nursing faculty and agency personnel to include NNRH employees.
  • Coordinate, plan, direct, and supervise staff education for NNRH.
  • Direct new employee orientation for NNRH and report information to department managers and the chief nursing officer.
  • Direct and coordinate NNRH staff competencies and certifications.
  • Network with clinical skills lab coordinators in local/state/national levels to include simulator user groups to share ideas, scenarios for human patient simulator, teaching tools, trends in the fields, ideas for grants etc.
  • Participate in department activities including curriculum development, program evaluation, and annual report and accreditation activities.
  • Participate in additional faculty and staff responsibilities, including committees as assigned or elected.
  • Collaborate with appropriate member of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate educational programs and opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Travel

The position may require driving to other GBC campuses, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act, with possible overnight stays to coordinate students and programs throughout the service area. There must be a commitment to the GBC mission to serve rural Nevada. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel.

Salary and Benefits:

Annual salary range is $60,000 - $90,000 - Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees

Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
