One of the three credit-colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus in the heart of downtown, providing academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The College has a modern science facility with state of the art instruments and labs. The ideal candidate has community college teaching experience and/or experience teaching students from very diverse backgrounds.
The Assistant Professor of Geology/Oceanography is a member of the Physical Sciences Department and reports to the Dean of the School of Mathematics, Sciences, and Nursing Education. The Physical Sciences Department includes the disciplines of Astronomy, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Physical Science, and Physics.
Hours and days may vary Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. The selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs. Assignment may include some combination of day, evening, and/or distance education classes. While the current vacancy is at San Diego City College, applicants should understand they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. Major Responsibilities
- Reports to the Dean of the School of Mathematics, Sciences, and Nursing Education.
- Teach classes in geology and oceanography and laboratories with an emphasis on real world skills with a mentorship-based approach.
- Supervise and instruct students.
- Maintain office hours for student advisement and counseling.
- Coordinate laboratory acquisitions and maintenance of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
- Ensure the proper use, handling, and storage of chemicals and the proper disposal of waste materials in accordance with regulatory agency guidelines.
- Other duties include participating in the development of curriculum, serving as a liaison between the geology program and other college, community, and industry entities, and performing other duties as assigned.
- Create an equitable and inclusive learning environment that effectively supports students from diverse backgrounds and special populations.
- Stay current on trends and skills.
- Collaborate with Physical Sciences faculty on budgeting, curriculum development, and other tasks.
- Maintain regular communication with students, faculty and program personnel.
- Maintain and/or build relationships with industry partners and transfer institutions.
Master's in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography or paleontology

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography or paleontology
OR
Bachelor's in geology AND Master's in geography, physics, or geochemistry
OR
the equivalent
Desired Qualifications:
Relevant academic background. Evidence of experience in and/or academic preparation for teaching lecture/laboratory courses in Geology and Oceanography at the post-secondary or advanced secondary level. Education and/or experience in curriculum development. Evidence of recent professional development activities that indicate currency in Geology and Oceanography and in education research. Experience or education in the development, implementation, and assessment of student learning outcomes. Evidence of technological literacy and skills appropriate for academic settings, including use of online teaching resources and recent involvement with student-centered classrooms and learning methods. Evidence of ability to establish effective relationships and communication with students, faculty, and staff. An understanding of the role of laboratory and field work and demonstrated ability to incorporate it effectively into the curriculum. An understanding and demonstrated ability to instruct and counsel students of great diversity in background, educational preparation, physical disability and learning ability.
