Department Profile
The Child Development Center (CDC) provides high-quality care and education to children ages 2 to 5 years old. The CDC also serves as a laboratory school for future teachers in the field of Early Childhood Education. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, our purpose is to provide a safe, nurturing, and enriching program for all children and their families. Our child development services are offered to students and employees of Cerritos College, and the larger community.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the Director, Child Development Center, this position assumes responsibility in addition to the role of teacher, the Atelierista/Art Teacher promotes the role of fine art as an integral and vital component of an exemplary inspired Reggio Emilia education. Will support and guide the teachers in supporting children's creativity and learning through the various one hundred languages of children, such as clay, wire, paint, dance, music, etc.; working with children alongside staff in rooms and specifically in the Atelier, to provide experiences and provocations for the children and to observe and document the learning process in detail. The person in this position is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the Child Development Center and are expected to perform duties with minimal direction.
Job Duties
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
1. Plan, prepare, and implement experiences in support of the curriculum according to the specific age and development of each individual child; support the teachers plan of possibilities that outlines the child's interest and learning activities.
2. Co-teach with the classroom teachers to develop lessons that support classroom teaching in a range of curriculum areas (science, mathematics, world language, history, language arts, etc.).
3. Coordinate the arts curriculum with Music, Theatre, Art, and Woodworking; collaborate with departments on campus to provide resources and guest artist.
4. Responsible for the operation of the outdoor Atelier/Art Studio working directly with children and ensuring that there is a broad range of creative experiences available for the children at all times.
5. Provide a stimulating environment for children and staff to work on long-term projects and provide a wide range of "intelligent" materials giving children the opportunity to express themselves through as many "languages" as possible.
6. Develop staff awareness of working with children to encourage their learning through creative expression, individually and as part of a group.
7. Develop staff understanding of the documentation process; provide training for other staff and monitoring their progress on an ongoing basis.
8. Work with children on creative experiences using a wide variety of media to encourage ideas, exploration, and questions.
9. Teach new skills to staff and children; Help children express themselves in as many ways possible.
10. Collaborate with staff to interpret children's work.
11. Introduce materials into the classroom Atelier and provide training on how to use them.
12. In conjunction with consultants provide in-house training on the Reggio approach about how to provide creative experiences.
13. Produce along with the CDC Program Specialist and the Director, Child Development Center, displays, documentation, booklets and videos on projects, and learning experiences for the annual event "Children's Voices".
14. Create an aesthetic environment in the outdoor Atelier and influences the aesthetic environment in the classroom.
15. Collect images, books, interesting objects, intelligent materials for the outdoor and classroom Ateliers.
16. Ensure your own continued professional development, with support as required.
17. Observe and document each individual child's growth and development on a continuous basis; document each child's growth and development through pictures, anecdotal notes, and sample work.
18. Maintain complete attendance reports; monitors, oversee practicum student's sign-in and sign-out sheets, and mentor practicum student experiences with children.
19. Attend and participate in professional group meetings, conferences, and workshops; maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the field of early childhood education; incorporate new developments as appropriate.
20. Participate in monthly staff meetings and weekly documentation meetings; act as a member of a team during any Child Development Department or Center special event.
21. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training: Option 1: 24 units of Early Childhood Education/Child Development (including core courses) and 16 general education units or 24 units of ECE/D (including core courses) and 16 general education units and 6 specialized units and 2 units of adult supervision or an Associate's degree or 60 units with 24 units of ECE/CD units (including core courses) and 3 units of ECE Administration.
Option 2: Bachelor of Arts/Science in Fine Arts, or related field and 12 units in ECE/CD, plus 3 units supervised field experience in ECE/CD setting.
Experience
Three years experience working in a licensed child development program as a teacher of infants or preschool age children and a minimum of two years experience working in a child development program inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach.
Child Development Master Teacher Permit
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Experience with community college or university lab schools
Supplemental Information
License or Certificate:
Possession of a Child Development Master Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Possession of a current pediatric C.P.R. Certificate and First Aid Certificate.
Health Requirements:
TB Clearance, record of flu shots and immunization record as stipulated by Title 22 Regulations.

Salary/Fringe Benefits
Grade 2 on the District Child Development Center Salary Schedule at 19.5 hours a week ($34.49 - $41.39 /hr).
This position will NOT include the Health and Welfare benefits package.
This position may be eligible for STRS.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time (19.5 hours a week) position.
Initial placement of employees on the child development salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.
Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.
Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.
Candidates must be able to provide proof of California residency prior to employment.
