The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Biology, De Anza College.
The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Under the direction of the Dean, Biological, Health, Environmental Sciences Division instruct community college biology courses to a diverse student population at a college committed to student equity. The instructor will be expected to teach in two or more topic areas. Course topic areas are typical of lower division undergraduate work in biology, which include: ecology and evolution, organismal biology, cell and molecular biology, and general biology for non-majors. Secondary duties could include activities such as student recruitment and advising; develop, implement, and evaluate curriculum in the subject matter of expertise in both the laboratory and lecture where appropriate, both credit and noncredit course; student success, completion, retention, and persistence data analyses that disaggregates for impacts on diverse categories of student groups, engagement with the community as a representative of their discipline and department, participation in college-wide (and district-wide) planning, commitment to diversifying curriculum delivery to best meet the evolving needs of our students (e.g., Credit for Prior Learning, Competency-Based Education, short-term course offerings, Dual Enrollment, Incarcerated Student offerings) and act as liaison between the college and professional and/or educational organizations and community advisory groups This should include the integration of computers for instructional purposes in both the laboratory and lecture where appropriate. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attendance at department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also serve on District and college committees and participate in campus extracurricular activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- A Master's degree in any biological science OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- College-level instructional experience in Biology.
- Community College level experience teaching Biology lecture and laboratory classes.
- Experience working with live cultures
- Experience with interdisciplinary applications of biology
- Experience with techniques and equipment required in teaching subject areas in lecture and laboratory.
- Teaching pedagogy adaptable to a variety of learning styles including an emphasis on interactive multimedia, internet resources, and hands-on lab experiences.
In addition, successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
- Ability to teach and communicate effectively with students.
- Ability to work closely and cooperatively with faculty and support staff.
- Ability to develop curriculum and work with academically and culturally diverse students.
- Flexibility and ability to work as a member of a team of professionals.
- Ability to communicate articulately and effectively with individuals differing in age, gender, ethnicity, educational, and economic background.
- Ability to encourage students to engage in their own learning and motivate them to develop critical thinking skills.
- Ability to change systems of teaching delivery to meet differing student needs and able to adapt to change easily.
- Awareness of how Biology might be biased by socio-cultural norms and an ability to facilitate difficult conversations on the topic of cultural considerations in the classroom.

HIRING RANGE: $72,704.00 - $119,405.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 10-months per year.
